Who's who in the Miss Guyana/Universe line up

Eleven beauties will vie for the Miss/ Guyana Universe title on June 4 at the Splashmins Fun Park, Linden/Soesdyke Highway. The Scene recently took the opportunity to speak to the delegates:

Lavonia Springer

Standing at 5' 9", this New Amsterdam beauty describes herself as a spontaneous and positive person. Although Lavonia is the youngest delegate, she is no stranger to pageantry. In 2000, she won the Miss Emancipation pageant and placed first runner-up, with her mother, in senior category of the Mother and Daughter Pageant in 2002. Up until she was selected for the Miss Guyana/Universe pageant, Lavonia was employed at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports as a music teacher for under-privileged children in her hometown. This former President's College student plans to pursue child psychology in the near future. This career choice comes after having worked with children. She loves African dishes and bright colours, which she says lifts her spirit. She also loves dressing up, stepping out in style and costume jewellery.

Christa Simons

At age 20 and in her final year at the University of Guyana, Christa believes this is the best time to take on the challenge of Miss Guyana/Universe. This former student of St Joseph and the Bishops' High, who is currently pursuing studies in Sociology, plans to become a lawyer one day. She took part in the Miss UG pageant in 2003 and was one of the coordinators for the Miss Den Amstel pageant. Before then, while attending primary school, she was Miss Den Amstel. Christa wants to encourage youths to be leaders in their communities. This delegate measuring 5' 9" says she is a fashion fanatic. She loves being around children and old people; children make her laugh and the old folks make her think. Christa, who is an outdoors type loves climbing trees and cycling. She believes that lilac and pink look suit her and so she deems them her favorite colours.


Omega Narine

Omega Narine's name is a familiar one in the world of pageantry. In 2003, this 24-year-old was a delegate in the Miss Guyana World Pageant but did not place. She then went on to be one of the Simpli Royal's Sensational Seven. The South Ruimveldt resident attended the East Ruimveldt Secondary School before going to the Institute of Distance and Continuing Education and doing a course in Marketing Management. At present, she is studying Spanish at the Languages Institute. A lover of Latin and jazz music, Omega wants to eventually own her own business. She says she prefers black to any other colour since it is strong and speaks for itself. Omega, who is 5' 8", is an employee of Tribal Vibes and Creative Advertising.

Melinda De Santos

"Sexy, tantalizing, glamorous and educating" is how this 19-year-old former Queen's College student likes to describe herself. Melinda works at Laparkan as a receptionist. She soon hopes to pursue her dream of becoming a corporate lawyer. She likes that aspect of law because she enjoys debating. This Lacytown resident believes that it is every girl's dream to become Miss Guyana Universe and she said she entered the pageant to showcase Guyana's eco-tourism, and natural and human resources. In 2003 she was the third runner-up in the Miss Guyana Talented Teen pageant; a delegate in the Miss Bartica Regatta pageant and also one of the Simpli Royal's Sensational Seven. She likes travelling, shopping, modelling, socializing and dancing. Melinda says she looks hot in gold and white.

Queenith Dundas

Third runner-up in the Miss Linden Town Week pageant, Queenith, wants to become a commercial economist. This 19-year-old works at Clico Life Insurance Company in Georgetown. Queenith says she was told by family and friends to take every opportunity that comes her way and that is how she ended up entering the pageant. She says she is already very nervous. Queenith attended the Linden Foundation Secondary School. She has developed a love for clothes and jewellery and loves pink because it looks good on her.

Allana Ernest

This 19-year-old from Mahdia is currently a student at the New Amsterdam School of Nursing pursuing a diploma in nursing. The 5' 9" beauty says she entered this pageant because she wants the exposure and would like to meet new people. She likes socializing and adventure, which this forum allows her to do. Allana already knows the goals she wants to achieve if she becomes queen. She attended the Mahdia Secondary School but later transferred to Central High School where she wrote the CXC examinations after which she returned to her former school and taught for one year. Allana loves the colours blue and brown. As a child she dreamed of being a fashion designer and this is a dream she plans to pursue. She has a thing for fashion and jewellery. Her favorite dish is breadfruit and salt fish.

Lovern Spencer

At 24, Lovern has accomplished quite a lot. She started teaching at the Bartica Secondary School last year September and was the third runner-up in the Miss Bartica Regatta pageant this year. Her motivation to enter this pageant came from her friend who was in this very pageant several years ago. Lovern entered this pageant because she wants to showcase her many talents. This beauty hopes to be a graduate in the field of teaching. She is a former student of the Bartica Secondary after which she attended the Cyril Potter College of Education. Her favorite colours are lilac and purple.

Natasha Prakash

Natasha, Miss District of Colombia Teen made the decision to return to her homeland to participate in this pageant. This 21-year-old, 5' 3" beauty also competed in the Miss Teen USA. She left these shores at the tender age of ten. According to her it was her peers who inspired her to enter this pageant. After winning the Miss District of Colombia Teen title in 2003 she made several visits to Guyana and realized that a lot of young people were dropping out of school. She wants to speak out against this and says if she won the Miss Guyana/Universe title people would faster listen to what she has to say. Natasha, who graduated from college in 2004 is into acting and is in the process of making a movie with 20th Century Fox. She loves the colour pink because it looks good on her and makes her feel vibrant. She had a strong love for Italian food. She describes herself as blessed, determined and driven. Natasha loves travelling, sports, cooking and meeting people.

Sonjie Marselowe

At age 23, this former Miss Bartica Regatta has quite a few responsibilities. She is employed with Hope Foundation in Bartica as a communication officer/HIV rapid tester and counsellor. Sonjie also works with her brother as a sign artist and vehicle customization. She said Hope Foundation, which is a non-governmental organization sponsored by the Guyana HIV/AIDS Reduction Project (GHARP) responds to HIV/AIDS and many other social issues affecting Region Seven. Being in the army, is the goal she is working towards. If that doesn't work out the Foreign Service is her next option. She said people pay a lot of attention to this pageant and she felt that it was the perfect opportunity for her to showcase Bartica and its environs together with her many talents. Sonjie has participated in fashion shows held by Sonia Noel, Joanne Lynch from Bartica among others. She attended the Central High School and City College. She describes herself as someone who is always willing to face up to a challenge and who always put her best foot forward to conquer that challenge. Sonjie loves any shade of pink. To her it is a colour that expresses confidence and simplicity. She loves cheesecake.

Shanella Bourne

Twenty-one-year-old Shanella, who hails from Stewartville, West Coast Demerara was inspired by her mom, who is her role model, to enter this pageant. Shanella is a secretary at the La Belle International Apartment/Restaurant and Bar. She competed in the Miss Jamzone in 2002. Since then she has been busy with her education at St John's College then Critchlow Labour College and the University of Guyana's IDCE. Shanella aspires to one day become a lawyer. She says she has always liked it and her aunt, who is a lawyer in the USA, inspired her to pursue that avenue. She loves the colour brown, which, according to her, dazzles in the sun. This 5' 4", brown-eyed beauty is very outgoing and fun to be around. Shanella, who weighs 130 pounds, says that she loves to listen to hip-hop, soul and culture music.
