History was created at the Scout Association of Guyana annual general meeting last Wednesday when Zaida Joaquin was appointed the first female Chief Commissioner.
According to a press release from the association, Joaquin takes over from Gary Mendonca who served from 2003 to 2006. Joaquin became a Cub Scout Leader in 1998 and was appointed a District Commissioner in 2000. She also served as treasurer for three years and has held the position of Deputy Chief Commissioner responsible for Administration since 2003.
Mendonca is praised for his unselfish and devoted service during his term of office. He has now been appointed deputy chief commissioner of the youth programme. Also, Dennis Hopkinson and Jennifer Stephens have been appointed deputy chief commissioners in the expansion and finance categories, respectively. At the same time Colin Best and Neville Duncan were appointed district commissioners and Andrew Ramcharitar, Reeza Joaquin, Aretha Morgan and Carl Pierre were appointed assistant district commissioners.
The Executive Committee of the National Scout Council was also announced at the meeting. The executive comprises Ron Robinson, president, Ben ter Welle and Ramsay Ali first and second vice-president respectively, Harryram Parmesar, treasurer, Nelofar Rampersaud, secretary, Sonia Roberts, assistant secretary/treasurer and Paulette Paul, public relations officer. Other committee members are Lloyd Validum, Gregory Glasgow and Denzil Hopkinson.
The new executive committee is expected to begin discussions on an action plan for scouting during 2006/2007 at its first meeting on May 3.
