Ulex said she is not doing any intense training for the pageant at the moment, but will work on losing some weight. She feels she has enough experience with pageants and she knows what it takes to win one. Her wardrobe for the various segments, which includes evening gown, swimsuit and a national costume, is being addressed and all she needs do is her best, when she gets to China.
Still to win a major beauty pageant, one time talented teen queen, Ulex Atwell is ready to settle down and start a family, she told The Scene in a recent interview.
Although she is slated to represent Guyana in the upcoming Miss Tourism International pageant, Ulex has been pursuing her academic goals and had just completed her final examination in the field of Medical Technology at the University of Guyana when she sat down with The Scene.
Currently preparing to strut her stuff in Beijing, China come July 8 and represent Guyana before a huge audience, she says while this is a huge opportunity and the fulfilment of a dream, she is also looking to pursue other dreams, which include her academic goals, getting married and probably starting a family.

Ulex became a household name ever since she was crowned the Miss Guyana Talented Teen back in 2000. After winning that pageant, she felt motivated to enter the Miss Guyana World pageant in 2001. She placed second runner-up and two years later entered the Miss Guyana Universe pageant and placed first runner-up.
In 2005, Ulex took another stab at the Miss Guyana World pageant, but again failed to take the title, placing first runner-up instead.
Why did she do Miss Guyana World pageant again? Ulex said she had always wanted to enter a pageant in a non-Caribbean country and thought the Miss Guyana World pageant in 2005, would be her best shot at achieving that.
Jasmine Herzog was adjudged the winner. But this year that dream will be fulfilled, as Ulex heads to China.
Now 23 years old, Ulex who is hoping to commence her studies in medicine come September and says she will no longer be entering pageants. "I think I have grown too old for that. It's time for me to move on."
The Miss Tourism International pageant is compulsory for the first runner up of the Miss Guyana World pageant.
"Pageantry used to be a hobby for me, but I am getting into seriousness," the beauty stressed. "I am getting older, I have to do other things."
But she said she would still continue to model.
Ulex described herself as someone who is outgoing, fun, hardworking; someone who knows what she wants and is willing to do whatever it takes to get it. Ulex loves herself and said that she is very comfortable in her being.
"I love positive people..., but I hate negativity."
The former St Rose's High School student loves designs by Derek Moore, Olympia Small and Michelle Cole.
Her role model is Pamela Dillon and she firmly believes that her parents moulded her into Ulex Atwell.
She sees Guyana in the next five years gaining a place in the top ten of the Miss Universe and Miss World pageants.
Ulex, though very positive and outgoing, confessed that she blushes a lot when her fans respond positively to her.
Among her other achievements is second runner-up at the Miss Caribbean Hibiscus pageant held in St Maarten in 2004. In that same pageant she won the best costume prize.
Ulex was part of the Miss Caribbean World pageant in Tortola in 2005 and won best talent with a Diana Ross Medley.
Within the various pageants, Ulex also won prizes such as Miss Body Beautiful, Miss Sacha Face, Miss Photogenic and Miss Intelligence.
She has adopted the Mahaica Children's Home as her favourite charity and would help with their fund-raising activities and securing them with comfort with the help of Simpli Royal.

By the way, Ulex revealed to the Scene that while she loves the conservative look during the week, at the weekend she switches to sporty clothing, such as strapless and strap tops and short skirts.
"I live a life pleasing to myself and think that life has been pretty good to me, she said.
Born in Essequibo to famous calypsonian Llewellyn Atwell and Bernadette, Ulex grew up in Georgetown. She has two sisters.
