Uddin wins Cdn$100 with 'Dreams at the Edge'

University of Guyana biology student Muhamed Nabeel Uddin has won the top prize of one hundred Canadian dollars in the Kevin Roberts Creative Writing competition put on by the institution.

According to a press release, Uddin, a freshman at UG's Tain Campus, Berbice, won with the short story, "Dreams at the Edge". The story tells of a young man who sets out to fulfil his dreams in New York but, after his money runs out, becomes involved in the drug trade and is almost killed.

The university said the prize is named in honour of Canadian Professor Kevin Roberts who, in March, was a guest lecture for one month at the Berbice campus.

Roberts conducted a number of seminars in Creative Writing at the institution.

Uddin attended the Number 56 Primary School and Skeldon Line Path Secondary before enrolling at the university. His interest in writing began while at secondary school.
