The Hurricane veered north

John Crow
You never used to sit on the guango tree

After the storm at dawn
I found you there
On a limb that God's own fury
Had twisted to death

Our roof held
Beds were dry
We only lost
A small store of tinned mackerel
And some hours of sleep

We shall gather fuel to cook a fowl
The lumber in due season
Can cut a coffin or two

Bridget Jones (1979), in Victor L. Chang, ed. Pathways: A Journal of Creative Writing, No. 16, April 2000 (UWI, Mona, Jamaica) .
