Phagwah brings us all together

Guyana Chronicle

Dyed in blue water, these youths from Grove on the East Bank Demerara strike a theatrical pose.

The Phagwah celebrations erupted in communities across the country yesterday, as Guyanese from all walks of life and of all ethnic and religious persuasions came together and showered each other with red and blue and yellow powder and with coloured water, all signifying the joyous re-birth and new life that is the essence of this Spring festival. On the lawns of the Indian Cultural Centre in the city, and in communities along the East Coast and East Bank Demerara, our photographers Cullen Bess-Nelson and Winston Oudkerk captured the spirit of the celebrations as a good time was had by all.

Reports from other regions across the country told of similar jollification yesterday.

These two boast elaborate contraptions for spraying abeer on revelers.

The man chauffeuring these young men is enjoying himself every bit as the riders in the tray.
