Two poems by Stanley Greaves

Pork-Knocker

Three hearts and flowers,
joy of an ancient day
when my songs are in
the book God wrote.
Tread softly sacred jewels,
star, leaf, and spotted jaguar,
the shores of desperate rivers
contain the serpent — counterpoint,
where more is nothing more than less
in the nest of concupiscence.

Dream of Demerara

In my land,
no known ghosts walk.
Our assumed history
is but a strange wind
that leaves no mark
upon an indifferent sea.
Even monsters dwell elsewhere
in another safe place,
where victims know themselves.
