There is a new 2006 Calypso Monarch. The returning Calypso Monarch was dethroned. The Soca soft drink sponsored Calypso final was the rave last Saturday evening.
The new Calypso Monarch, Lord Canary, who was born Malcolm Corrica, rocked the crowd at the National Park with his winning piece “ Show me the Love .”
In his wake, he left the Mighty Rebel to take second place with his song “ My Opinion ” and defending champion Lady Tempest in third with her song “ Stop the Violence .”
The competition began at around 21:00 hrs with the reigning Junior Calypso Monarch, Mark Batson, putting the crowd in the mood with his piece “ True Identity .”
The competition was a mixture of creativity and ingenuity, putting the judges in the proverbial hot seat as the 13 contestants let it all out to achieve the most sought after position for calypsonians in Guyana .
Chief Judge, Enrico Woolford, and his team Rosamund Addo, Cecil Semple, Robert Williams, Basil Bradshaw, Sandra Hooper, Depsy Jervis and Sharmaine Jones, were tasked with making the right decision as all the contestants performed remarkably well.
In attendance was Prime Minister, Samuel Hinds; Minister of Home Affairs, Gail Teixeira; Minister of Public Service, Jennifer Westford; Leader of the Opposition Robert Corbin and members of the Diplomatic Corps.
