Sandy Babb Street Kitty

No street of streets

just one of many

bumping to meet

Railway line Kitty

A rutted dirty ugly street

a street just one of many

My street has moods, yes many moods,

At dawn she’s warm and friendly,

the lamplight mixed with sunrays throws

and eerie incandescent glows

about the warm of mosquitoes

The guard my sleeping street.

But noon her ugliness returns

with teeming traffic, cursing kids,

with savage horns and neighbours’ brawls

with tempers flaring, horses rearing,

from savage sun, from sordid scene

I long for afternoon.

It comes a rushing o’er the sky

over the houses the trench of the street

where youths do now begin to meet

It casts its cooling shadows high,

tempers cool and mothers soon

cease abusing, its afternoon.

And now the moon drives off the sun

night has come, day is done.

Throughout the street there now arises

kitchen smells, warm suprises,

hurts forgot for laughs attest

and now at last my street’s at rest
