When Things Seem Dark...

When things seem dark and dreary,
Trouble brewing everywhere,
When all your soul is weary
With life's bustle and life's care
Just remember you were put here
Not to live an aimless life
But to bear an equal co-share
Of life's worry and its strife.

When your hardest you've been trying
And it seems that you must fail,
Do not stop for useless cyring;
Harder try you must prevail!
And remember that you're put here
For a purpose great and grand,
Not to drift thro' dread or thro' fear
But to make a noble stand.

Be strong then and courageous!
Meet your troubles with a grin!
If laughing seems outrageous
Crying is a bigger sin.
Be cheerful then and care-free
But withal do nothing mean,
And life will e'er be happy
The world all fair and clean.

(W. A. Buttery in Guianese Poetry: Covering the Hundred Years' Period 1831-1931)
